Remarkable that he's still there.
He's been moved around a bit on his perch,
but nobody has made off with him or
tossed him in the marsh in a fit
of religious rage. (yet)
Of course -
he's good with whatever comes.
The blessings remain the same.
No Matter What.
Unstoppable.

"That, I think is the power of ceremony: it marries the mundane to the sacred. The water turns to wine, the coffee to a prayer. The material and the spiritual mingle... What else can you offer the earth which has everything? What else can you give but something of yourself? A homemade ceremony, a ceremony that makes home." ~ Robin Wall Kimmerer ~ (Quote via AOAC) ~ |

“Once in a while we meet a gentle person. Gentleness is a virtue hard to find in a society that admires toughness and roughness. We are encouraged to get things done and to get them done fast, even when people get hurt in the process. Success, accomplishment, and productivity count. But the cost is high. There is no place for gentleness in such a milieu. Gentle is the one who does ‘not break the crushed reed, or snuff the faltering wick.’ Gentle is the one who is attentive to the strengths and weaknesses of the other and enjoys being together more than accomplishing something. A gentle person treads lightly, listens carefully, looks tenderly, and touches with reverence. A gentle person knows that true growth requires nurture, not force. Let’s dress ourselves with gentleness. In our tough and often unbending world our gentleness can be a vivid reminder of the presence of God among us.” ~ Henri Nouwen ~ (Quote Thx To: Alive On All Channels) ~ |

Whatever pain you feel,
take it in,
wishing for all beings to be free of it.
Whatever pleasure you feel,
send it out to others.
In this way,
our personal problems and delights
become a stepping-stone for understanding
the suffering and happiness of all beings.

I placed him in the crotch of a split-trunked
oak tree back in January. He's still there.
The introductory letter that told about
him along with the invitation to
take him home is (oddly)
gone. So - maybe
someone read
the letter
and
decided that
it was better if he
stayed where he is...
Who knows?
He seemed happy enough..

"Jizos- Talking and Listening"
I have discovered that most people have no one to talk to, no one, that is, who really wants to listen. When it does at last dawn on a man that you really want to hear about his business, the look that comes over his face is something to see. ~ Walker Percy ~ ~ |

I went by the Imagine art studio on Rocky Neck yesterday.
Peeking over the picket fence, I saw that the
Jizo I had placed next to the door at
the base of the tree was not
only still there, but
had a lovely
rockery
in his front yard
now!

On January 16th of this year, I left this (store-bought) Jizo next to a Hobbit-like door at the base of a tree outside an artist's gallery on Rocky Neck. I check in on him whenever I'm up there. Recently I found that someone had left an offering of a very pretty abalone shell. Fun! It's touching to see when people (or a single) person gets what's going on and interacts in such a cool way.. My neighbor once told me that anonymously leaving Jizo's here and there to be found by others seemed kind of creepy to him, but from my experience, people (the majority of them adults, surprisingly) really connected with the idea.

We visited graves on Mother's Day to say "Hi", place small pots of flowers, and tell stories about our Mothers and Grandmothers. Years ago, I placed a Jizo figurine from The Jizo Project on my parents' headstone. It remained intact and unmolested (surprisingly) until this years' cycle of grass trimming around the headstones.. I found him decapitated at the base of the headstone. It's a pretty good bet that he got grabbed by a weed whacker which then summarily disconnected his head from his body.. I took him home in my pocket and re-attached his head with Gorilla Glue.. GG recommends clamping the piece for two hours after gluing. I found a smallish work clamp and set him up in its jaws - tightening to a firm grip, but no more - fearing shattering the piece and / or marring the glaze. He's all better now and ready to go back to work. As you can see from the above, being head-clamped is nobody's idea of fun, not even a Bodhisattva's..
